(November, 25, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Chief Justice Sarath Silva hearing a petition on 22 Nov. Filed by National Congress Parliamentarian Suriarachy in the Supreme Court challenging the sale of Telecom shares owned by NTT, said it was the duty incumbent on the Govt. to adhere to transparency and Tender procedures.
CJ, describing the petition filed by Suriarachy as one in the public interest and important for public well being emphasized that it is the duty of the Judiciary to prevent loss of income to the State and protect it from going to third parties. The sale procedure undertaken by the Treasury Secretary, P.B.Wijayasundara may be hailed by some, but, he is not that important to the country, he added.
While issuing an interim injunction prayed for by Suriarachy against the transaction, the CJ advised the lawyers appearing for the respondents to show love for the country subordinating personal gains, as already Rs. 235 million has been lost by the country on this deal!
