LTTE’s Tamilnet is on downward trend

(November, 17, Oslo, Sri Lanka Guardian) LTTE’s tamilnet.com operating from Denmark is progressively loosing its readership. Tamilnet is the official web media started with the help of Norway in 1996 to disseminate LTTE news in English. It had wide variety of readers from its LTTE activists, media persons and persons of political interests who access the website.

The first graphical presentation below confirms 46% drop in its hit rate within the past twelve months. Except for intermittent upward trends during the year, the overall trend is showing a sharp decline.

The other two graphs below further illustrate the declining hit rate of the website.

Waning popularity of the LTTE amongst the Tamil people is said to be the cause for the decline. An LTTE supporter K Arunan based in Denmark said: ‘I used to daily read the Tamil net until a year ago. But I only read it now and then. I am disappointed with the website as it does not give true facts about the situation facing the Tamils in the North. There are so many other Tamil and Sri Lankan websites that give valuable information and these seems to be honestcredible than the Tamilnet’. Tamilnet is said to be originally set up in Norway with the Norwegian government support. LTTE’s Nadarajah Suthaharan based in London played a crucial role to establish it with he support of former LTTE international finance operative Sarveswaran known as Sarve.

The Tamilnet operates with a massive financial budget and has about six full time paid writers and an editor.
