(November, 19, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The United People’s Freedom Alliance governments won their 3rd budget, the budget for 2008 of it 2nd terms with 16 votes more than the main opposition in Sri Lankan this evening (Monday, 19 November).
However the third reading of the budget will be voted on only in December, prior to final approval Government, Democratic faction of the UNP and Udewe Dhammloka Thero, JHU and SLMC voted for the budget. But the JVP, the UNP’s under Ranil Wickmasingahe, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and Mano Ganeshan who is the leader of the Western People’s Front, opposed the budget.
Lt. Col. Gotabaya Rajapaksa who is the Defence Secretary and a key player in the Government. He told the Lanka Guardian: “I’m happy about the winning of the budget vote, but whether we win or lose is not a problem as far as our war against terrorism is concerned. We will attack with or without winning the budget”
Meanwhile, Anura Bandaranaike who is Minster of Heritage said, “My vote was given to the government because my parents worked as the party’s founder members and were leaders of the party at one time.”
Wijedasa Rajapaksha and Nandana Gunathilake, ruling party MP and JVP MP respectively, did not vote today.
“The opposition vows they can win this budget, but they can’t do it. There are more MPs with us than with the Opposition,” Media Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa told the Media.
“Ranil has lost again. This time makes it his fifteenth time of losing”, he added.
