(November, 08, London, Sri Lanka Guardian) Sources now confirm only six hundred people had attended the Thamilchelvan memorial gathering at Harrow Leisure Centre on November 5, 2007. The meeting was organised by the Tamil Youth Organisation based in Harrow with the help of Cllr Daya Idaikadar.
The LTTE websites reported that the hall was overwhelmed and over 10,000 people attended the function. An attendee at the function confirmed a meagre 600 people had attended 1,500 intake hall. The organisers were making repeated announcement that no one should leave the hall until the end.
The memorial event started at about 6.30pm. The programmes opened with the lighting of the candle by Mrs Suba Pulendran who was the wife of Pulendedran who committed suicide with five others in Indian Peace Keeping Force custody in 1987 which started a full scale war between the IPKF and the LTTE.
She was followed by Dr N Sathiamoorthy who is the head of the LTTE front charity White Pigeon in the UK. He placed the flower garland to Brigadier Thamichelvan’s picture. Three other LTTE front Tamil National Alliance parliamentarians Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam, Mrs Pathmini Sithambaranathan and Vino Nogarathlingam garlanded the pictures of Col Alex, Major Kalai Arasan lieutenant Artchival respectively. Major Mihunthan’s photograph was garlanded by his sister Mrs Mohanadas and followed by Mrs Rachael garlanding the picture of lieutenant Mavaikumaran.
Following the LTTE sympathisers in the hall were asked to drop flower petals for the dead hero’s pictures. Mrs Adele Balasingam initiated the dropping of flower petals. The following people spoke at the event.
