(October, 13, New Delhi, Sri Lanka Guardian) Sri Lanka on Saturday said it wants India's moral rather than military support in addressing its vexed ethnic problem as it emphasised that New Delhi had a "unique responsibility" to ensure peace in the region.

President Mahinda Rajapakse said India should provide a "dynamic" and "strong economic leadership" to South Asia and suggested to countries in the region that time for "playful relationships" with India are over.

Observing that India now stands on the threshold of a unique position of leadership in the Asian century, he said India's neighbours look forward to sharing its progress with them and allay fears about instability in the region.

"India must, while stabilizing itself as an economic power house, help the neighbouring countries too to become economically stable," he said.

"My vision is of an India that can never be separated from my vision for Sri Lanka," he added.

To a question on whether it was seeking stronger military support from New Delhi, the President said "India has given us assistance....what we need is moral support. That is more than enough."

Rajapakse said he imagined India as a "truly mature" nation that "understands well the sensitivities and aspirations of other countries, societies and cultures" as such learned maturity will see New Delhi take others along with her to progress.
