JHU protests crackdown on Genocide of Myanmar's Buddhist monks

(October, 08, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Activists belonging to the Jathika Hela Urumaya marched to the Myanmar Embassy in Colombo today (Oct 08th) and staged a protest in a show of support of democracy in Myanmar and to condemn crackdown on Buddhist monks by military rulers.

Led by JHU leader Ven. Ellawala Medhananda Thera, the protestors, carrying national and Buddhist flags, began their march from Thilakaratnarama Temple in Borella, Colombo 08.

Although they intended to hand over a petition, no embassy official had come forward to accept it.

However, the JHU said a week ago that the street protests by Buddhist monks and the people of Myanmar have been misinterpreted by the western media as an agitation against the country’s military rulers.

Led by the monks, the people of Myanmar have taken to the streets to protest against the rising commodity and fuel prices, and not to call for the restoration of democracy, the thera said in Colombo on October 02nd.
