Jeya TV’s assistance for Sri Lankan students

(October,10, Madurai, Sri Lanka Guardian)Jeya TV has collected Rs. 210,000/= through its Makkal Arangam programme and has handed over same for the higher education of 21 Sri Lankan students of the Madurai district refugee camps.

The Jeya TV was opened on behalf of the ADMK headed by J.Jeyalalitha. In its programme held between 11.00 am to 12.00 noon, it is lending a hand for the upliftment of underprivileged, disabled and the backward villages of Thamilnadu.

Last year when a programme was held in Madurai on the head of the director Visu, a Sri Lankan student from the refugee camp made him understand that they need help for their studies. Immediately he collected Rs. 210,000/= and gave away 21 students Rs. 10,000/= per head.

The programme of granting money to Sri Lankan students is to be re-telecast on Friday 12.10 2007 at 5.00 p.m. on Jeya TV.

Meanwhile, four Negombo fishermen held in custody at the Madurai Central Prison were released last Monday according to reports.

These four men had been arrested in the Indian waters of Tutricorn while engaged in fishing by the Indian Navy on the 13th of June. They were handed over to Tamil Nadu police.

The Tutricorn magistrate ordered them to be remanded for four months, when they were produced before him. The four months period ended with yesterday and therefore they were released.

The functionary of the Fishermen Federation Canicius Fernando traveled to Madurai to accompany them back to Sri Lanka and in the ensued argument he was shot dead by the prison guard on the 5th of this month.
