Thailand Refused KP arrested

Thai police said on Wednesday there was no truth to reports triggered by an allegation on a Sri Lankan government Web site that a top Tamil Tiger leader had been arrested in Bangkok, reports the Reuter news agency.

"I've checked with related police bureaux -- the Immigration Police, the Metropolitan Police and the Special Branch. There has been no report of a Tiger rebel arrested in Bangkok," national police spokesman Lieutenant-General Ronnarong Youngyuen told the Agency.

"If we'd arrested him, we would have made good publicity out of it," he added.

However the Sri Lankan Defence Ministry site reports "reliable sources from Thailand reveal that LTTE's chief for cross-border terrorist activities, Kumaran Padmanadan, alias "KP", has been arrested in Bangkok".

Meanwhile, Pottu Amman a head of the LTTE intelligence wing’ one of news web site says KP living in LTTE controlled area. “Mr Pathmanadan who has since late 2003 retired to the peaceful village of Mankulam, here in Vavuniya, burst into laughter,” according to the Web site.

Kumaran Padmanabhan was leading the group of international arms procurement that supplied weapon to the Tamil Tiger fighting against Sri Lankan forces. He shifted his base to Thailand and Combodia and was controlling arm supply from there.

Ronnarong said Thai immigration police had no record of him entering Thailand through legal channels.

He also denied reports that his alleged arrest followed the detention of three LTTE operatives trying to buy guns and 45,000 rounds of ammunition in Thailand's southern coastal province of Ranong last month. But Ronnarong said Thai police did hand over three LTTE members to Sri Lanka last month after the LTTE member served jail terms for arms smuggling following their arrest four years ago.

Hence, Col. Apichart Suribunya, chief of Thai Interpol said "According to immigration records for the past two years, there is no record of him entering the country," he added that their had been no arrest in past few days.
