Dr. D.D.Hettiarachchi, who is an Indigenous Physician, claims that even Hepatitis B which is worse than AIDS can be cured. He says “HIV is a new name for a disease which was in existence, since the beginning of mankind”.
Dr.Hettiarchchi is of the view that AIDS is a gold mine for multinational companies to make billions, at the cost of AIDS patients. “These companies will never try to find medicine to permanently cure AIDS, but will continue with medicine that can only control the disease for sometime”.
Quacks
When we told him that there are many quacks who try to get publicity through the media in order to attract patients, this statement angered the Physician and he said that he never asked any Media organisation to interview him. He said he is a registered medical practitioner at the Ayurvedic Medical Council since 1981 and his registration number was 7547.
Thereafter he pulled a file from his drawer and showed us the original medical reports of a patient who had been detected as being HIV positive and had been subsequently cured. This was substantiated by reports issued by Asiri hospital and produced by Dr Hettiarachchi to us.
The Patient had taken the initial report on 02/04/2002.The report confirmed that he was HIV positive. But when he took another report after three years of medication from Dr Hettiarachchi, the report dated 01/09/2005, says that the patient is HIV negative.

After learning of the dedication of Dr.Hettiarachchi, Ayurvedic Registrar Dr.Danister L. Perera and Commissioner, Ramani Gunawardane had taken up the issue. Then President Mahinda Rajapakse had appointed a Steering Committee at the Ayurvedic Medical Research Institute in Navinna, Colombo to conduct a “Study and Research Programme on Indigenous Medicine for HIV/AIDS” which will conclude in two years.
Though Doctor is treating the deadliest virus on earth, he is living in a half constructed house in Ganemulla with the least amount of facilities, clearly showing that he has not commercialised his profession like other medical practitioners in Sri Lanka.
“When asked as to how he could afford to buy the medicine for patients, he said he never charged a fee from patients but accepted what they gave. “How can I ask for money, like some Doctors, from dying patients who have lost all their wealth because they were suffering from AIDS? When patients come to me the only wealth they have left is the dress they wear”, the physician said.
He said” I have not made money during my career but the only wealth I have are the patients I have cured from the medicines that I have given”.

Then we told him that so far no medicine has been found to fight viruses. He said according to the western medicine no medicine has yet been found to treat viruses but according to Ayurvedha there are medicines to treat viruses. When asked about the problems he faced from AIDS patients, he said that many patients come to him not even informing their families. Once the families get to know that a member is HIV positive, many families corner the patient. He requests families to treat the patients with compassion. When asked from whom he learned ayurvedic medicine, he said that he always respects and remembers his guru the late Naotunne Saranapala Thera who taught him the intricacies of Ayurvedha. He said he wanted to cure patients who were dying of AIDS and wrote to many previous Presidents but none of them took any initiative. He was grateful to President Mahinda Rajapaksa for appointing a Steering Committee to conduct a study into the cure of AIDS through Ayurvedic medicine.
