PM vows on LTTE’s chemical weapons

Prime Minister (PM) Ratnasiri Wickremanayake is accusing the LTTE of preparing to launch attacks using chemical weapons in violation of international chemical weapons treaties.

He was speaking in Parliament today (September 04th) while moving a motion to extend the state of emergency by a further month.

The premier also said that LTTE attacks in the past one month has claimed the lives of 21 security forces personnel and 27 civilians, while injuring 190 other security forces personnel.

According to Ministry of Defence , LTTE's plot to utilize chemical weapons in their future battlefields has been tracked by the Intelligence sources. .

The security forces were able to find 3,600 liters of sulfuric acid on 12th August 2007 in Anuradhapura north - Medawachhiya. The occupants of the tipper vehicle which carried the acid were handed over to the CID (Criminal Investigation Department) and it was reported that the suspects had past records of smuggling explosives to LTTE controlled areas, as well as from LTTE-controlled areas to government controlled areas, the minister reports last week.

It is revealed that the LTTE has an underground laboratory in the Adampan area bordering Mannar - Kilinochchi districts. This suggests the LTTE are planning for chemical attacks in the near future.
