5638 fishermen have joined the pension scheme in the Batticaloa District and presently, 129 fishermen are drawing pensions said the Director of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Department, S.T. George.
11382 persons are engaged in lagoon fishing and 22217 persons are into sea fishing in the Batticaloa District. Fishermen in the age group of 18 to 59 years and fish traders are entitled to join the pension scheme, he said.
Meanwhile according to statistics, there are more youths in the Batticaloa District. There are 163,720 persons in the age group of 15 and 29 years living in the Batticaloa District.
There are 129,103 persons in the age group of 30 to 49 years, 118,018 persons in the age group of 5 to 14 years, 58,980 persons in the age group of 50 to 59 years, 58,907 persons under 4 years and 40,741 persons over 60 years. The total population of this district is 579,469. Out of this 426,796 are Tamils, 15,489 are Muslims, 1162 are Sinhalese and 24 others.
