Nedumaran forgetful his Fast

Tamil Nationalist Movement a political group in Tamil Nadu, leader Pazhaniappan Nedumaran the 74 year old was called off his indefinite fast here this evening, after PMK founder S Ramadoss met him and conveyed chief minister M Karunanidhi's assurance to take steps for sending relief material, collected by the TNM leader, to suffering Tamils in Sri Lanka.

While his protest brought all pro-Eelam parties including the MDMK, PMK and DPI together, national parties like the CPI and BJP expressed solidarity with him. His protest received support from unexpected quarters within the CPI-M, known for its stand against Tamil Eelam.

State CPI-M secretary N Varadarajan in a statement here urged the Centre to allow relief material to be sent to the island Tamils. MDMK leader Vaiko was seen with Nedumaran for most of the time during the last three days, PMK founder S Ramadoss had backed his demand and requested him to give up the fast. Film actor R Sarathkumar, who has founded a new party, had also issued a statement supporting the fast. PMK leader GK Mani, DPI general secretary Thol Thirumavalavan, senior CPI leader R Nallakannu, state CPI secretary D Pandian and BJP leader and former Union minister S Thirunavukkarasar, besides some Tamil scholars and film directors, visited him during the past two days. Many Tamil Nationalist groups also have expressed solidarity with Nedumaran.

Nedumaran is one of the few Tamil Nadu political leaders to consistently express active concern over the Tamil predicament in Sri Lanka unlike many others whose interest waxes and wanes according to political self - interest. Unfortunately Nedumaran has chosen to hitch his wagon to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) star.

He supports the Tamil armed struggle for Tamil Eelam and regards Velupillai Prabakharan as not only the national leader of Eelam Tamils but also of the transnational Tamil nation including Tamils of India.
