The gamble for their salaries between teachers and government go on while close down future of our next generation.

The government is, on purpose, evading the G.C.E. (A/L) Examination answer paper evaluation issue, reports say.

At talks with the ministerial sub-committee to resolve the matter, the government promised to take a decision by today (September 06th) after discussions with the Salaries Commission.

However, at a discussion this morning between the ministerial sub-committee and teacher unions, it was intimated that the cabinet of ministers, on principle, accept that a salary anomaly exists in teacher and principal grades.

Accordingly, the Cabinet Secretary has notified the Salaries Commission of this, and its response is expected tomorrow.

Later in the day, the Supreme Court took up a fundamental rights petition and issued an injunction against a sabotage of the answer script evaluation, and ordered the police to arrest any violator.

When contacted, Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers Union Joseph Stalin said that they had been informed of a move to file a FR petition against teacher unions on September 07th, by an attorney named Anoma Gunatileke.

Therefore, teacher unions were prepared to take up the issue tomorrow. But, this petition had been taken up today, on purpose, in a pre-planned manner, Stalin said.

He expressed doubts on the success of tomorrow’s discussion, in light of today’s SC order, and said teacher unions will decide their future course of action tomorrow.

Meanwhile , the Advanced Level student today (September 06th) filed a fundamental rights petition in the Supreme Court against the decision by teacher unions to boycott the evaluation of G.C.E. (A/L) Examination answer scripts.


The petitioner, Rukman Senananda of Niwanthaka Chetiya Madya Maha Vidyalaya in Anuradhapura, sat for the exam this year.

The 20 respondents cited include Education Minister Susil Premajayantha, Education Ministry Secretary Ariyaratne Hewage, Commissioner General of Examinations Anura Edirisinghe, the Lanka United Teachers Union, the Ceylon Teachers Union, the Lanka Teachers Service Association, the Association of Educational Professionals and the Lanka Home Science and Agricultural Science Diploma Holders Association.

A bench headed by the Chief Justice considered the petition and issued an injunction against a sabotage of the answer script evaluation, and ordered the police to arrest any violator.
