LTTE will be shallow water fish soon - Douglas Devananda

If you try to introduce something entirely new, it will create unwanted conflicts of opinion. Each will look at it from their own peculiar angle. If the ruling party proposed something, then the opposition would demand something else. This has been the history of this country. And the problem will keep on dragging; said Minster Devananda interview with one of the Colombo based weekly news papers.

Can you tell us about your recent visit to Jaffna? How was the situation there?

There has been widespread rumours that the Tigers might attack Jaffna. When I was in Jaffna, I could hear the sounds of multi barrel bombardment. I was surrounded by about 300 people who came to meet me at my office in Jaffna at that time. EPRLF was the first organisation to introduce mortar weapons in the Tamil armed struggle.

It happened under my purview then. Now the LTTE is using the multi barrel launchers.
This was the first time I happened to hear the sound of the multi barrel. It was fearsome. I told the people who were gathered there that the LTTE ought to be blamed for the situation. They are the ones who always provoke the military forces.

There is a need for the government to keep the security forces in Jaffna in order to safeguard the people, as well as the sovereignty of the country. I cannot deny that the forces have a responsibility of protecting the Jaffna public from the clutches of the LTTE.
At the same time, I can imagine what sort of psychological impact these artillery attacks would have on the minds of the people.
