The Indian Foreign Ministry has rejected reports in the Sri Lankan media that a high level defence committee has been set up following talks between top officials of the two countries while Sri Lankans’ delegations official visit in India on last week.
Foreign Ministry Spokesman Navtej Sarna told the media in New Delhi yesterday (September 09th) that Indian officials and a Sri Lankan delegation comprising Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga, Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and Senior Presidential Advisor Basil Rajapaksa discussed matters last week at a routine meeting.
His ministry has no information to the effect that agreement was reached here to form a high level committee on defence, Sarna said, adding that he was not aware of the basis for the reports in the Sri Lankan media.
Meanwhile, the President's Office says there was no decision among those who participated in the discussions to establish an Indo-Lanka High Level Committee on defence as stated in its earlier report, "which was based on an incorrect interpretation of information on this matter"
It’s Policy Research and Information Unit (PRIU) says it regrets this error and apologizes to the members of the Sri Lanka delegation and the Indian officials they had discussions with, and to the media, in this regard.
