The request by the security forces to the people of the Jaffna Municipal area to obtain special identity cards for security reasons is a human rights abuse and violation of the constitution said "Horse-Rider" Kuthirai Gajendran.He said that it degrades the Tamil people living in Jaffna. It is an act of degrading the Tamil people living in Jaffna, he said further.
But it should be noted that the LTTE has issued identity cards to the Vanni people against the constitution recently and collected a fee from them, which Kuthirai Gajendran failed to mention.
After a period of political hibernation Mr Gajendran seems to have caught a tiny rat of an issue to ride about town in Jaffna crowing about a decision that may very well be in the interest of the people. Passes are not good and they can humiliate people and must be resorted to only in the extreme of circumstances. It is possible that there is a need to identify who exactly live in the Jaffna Municipal area for security reasons.
Can it be denied that there is every possibility some undesirables may want to plant bombs in Jaffna? It has been happening in Colombo - and continues to, and should this not be prevented from developing into a terror factor in Jaffna?
People like Gajendran serve terrorism and when convenient will quote the constitution. This is what is called OPPORTUNISM most cowardish.
