Colombo Additional District Judge Priyantha Fernando ordered Colombo based daily Tamil medium paper 'Veerakesari' editor V. Devaraj and its publisher Express Newspapers Ceylon Ltd to pay Rs. 5 million to TULF leader Anandasangaree as damages caused by an article published in Veerakesari.
The Court observed that the paper had carried the article without verifying its authenticity and the article was defamatory to Anandasangaree, a prominent Tamil democratic political leader. Filing the petition through Dissanayake Amarathunga associates, Anandasangaree stated an article that appeared on the page four of the Virakesari on April 18, 2004 was defamatory of him. Plaitiff Sangaree cited Express Newspapers Ceylon Ltd, S. Nadarajah and Chief Editor of Veerakesari V. Devarajah as defendants.
