Basil Boost as a Self-elected (National List) MP

The swearing in was overshadowed by the chaos in the Sri Lanka parliament as Opposition MPs jeered and displayed placards while the government MPs cheered the ceremony. Minister Dr. Mervyn Silva and several other government Ministers crossed towards the Opposition and tore an Opposition placard.

The Speaker had to adjourn the meeting for ten minutes around 9.45 AM due to chaos and said that the behavior of the government and Opposition MPs was unacceptable at a decent moment of a MP taking oaths.

Basil Rajapaksa, a resident of both Sri Lanka and the US is the eighth in Rajapaksa clan to represent the parliament. He was active in politics since 1970s and was one time a Vice Secretary of the ruling Sri Lanka Freedom Party. He is already a senior advisor to the President.
