Riding their bullock carts, the farmers of the tank-country came in their numbers to participate in the “Janarala” protest campaign in Anuradhapura this afternoon (August 17th). The skyrocketing fuel prices have taken us back to the era of bullock carts, they claimed.
Participants marched to the venue in three separate processions that started from the town’s new bus-stand, the Kadapanaha Junction and the public marketplace and culminated at the Salgado Stadium.
Accusing the government of suppressing minorities, gaining from the war and failing to punish those named by COPE, they displayed banners and placards which had slogans such as “Let us send the Rajapaksa Brothers Company home”, “Let us usher in a new era that treats all communities fairly”, and “Say no to communal or religious differences.”
Leader of opposition Ranil Wickremesinghe, and outside foreign minister Mangala Samaraweera and several UNP and anti Government political activities are due to address the rally.
