The government has claimed that most United National Party parliamentarians had sold their duty-free vehicles. “More than 90 per cent of MPs surrounding party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe have obtained bank credit for this,” Chief Government Whip, Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle told the media in Colombo today (August 15th).
According to the Minister, among them are several leading UNP MPs who are unduly concerned about the vehicle imported duty-free by Jathika Hela Urumaya leader, Venerable Ellawala Medhananda Thera. “At least Rs. 3.5 million has been borrowed per each of these vehicles. I am ready to place the details before the people,” the Chief Government Whip said.
It is not unusual for parliamentarians to import vehicles free of duty, as per their privilege, and sell them, he added.
