A Tamil family escaped the uncleared area in Vauniya and arrived at the government controlled via sea. The Navy had observed them while they were on their way to the cleared area and learnt that they had escaped because they could no longer bear the harassments of the LTTE terrorists.
According to them they had crossed the sea facing great difficulties. They had traveled in the in the wee hours, to avoid being noticed by sea tigers. Fishermen set out to sea at this time. The head of the family and 21 year old son had rowed the boat pretending fishing while mother and two daughters had been lying on the boat. While traveling in this manner they were in constant fear of being caught by tigers but once they surrendered to the Navy they had placed full trust in the Navy for their security and survival.
The members of the family have revealed that the tiger terrorists are forcibly recruiting at least one person from each family to replenish their depleted ranks and they had escaped mainly to ensure security of the family. The LTTE have been forcibly recruiting persons for the least six months and if they refuse they were abducted.
The family members further said escaping from the uncleared area was the only way out. There are so many families being disgusted with the activities of the LTTE have decided to flee the uncleared area to live in peace and harmony.
The family expressed their satisfaction on the steps taken by the government to establish civil administration in the Eastern province recently librated by the security forces. They further said that the people who were suffering under the grip of tiger terrorists in the North look forward to the day when the North too will be liberated from the LTTE. [File Photo]
