Senior LTTE leader killed in the sea confrontation

The third senior most leader of the LTTE's Sea Tiger wing was among the six killed in the pre dawn sea battle that erupted off Nayaru in the eastern sea yesterday morning, the Navy sources said.

Intercepted radio transmission among the LTTE cadres revealed that the third senior most leader of the LTTE's Sea Tiger wing, Chandrasekaran Pillai alias Thiyagan has been killed, a navy spokesman said. He said that during the battle at least one LTTE boat was destroyed killing five other senior Tigers.

“We were able to damage several other Sea Tiger boats during the fierce sea battle. The Tigers tried to beach and rescue some large number of trapped Tigers, who were fleeing from Thoppigala area,” he said adding that the fierce confrontation lasted for around 3 hours.Naval sources believe the death toll for the LTTE to be higher as the type of the LTTE craft destroyed by the Navy usually carries a crew of 12.
