The identification permits in possession of the fishermen in the peninsula are found to be not durable. They have to change them frequently and loose revenue due to it. The Chavatkadu Fishermen Co-operative Society has invited the attention of the Minister towards this problem and the Minister of Social Services and Social Welfare Douglas Devananda has taken steps to resolve this issue.
The Chavatkadu Fishermen Co-operative Society met the Minister Devananda on the 18th morning at the Ministers Jaffna office. They submitted demands to provide them with an extent of land for the playground and toilet facilities to their housing scheme.
The Minister, accepting their demands, instructed the Government Agent to take immediate steps to provide the housing scheme with toilet facilities and wanted the G.A. to submit a report on the possibility of allocating land to be used as the playground.
The minister has also promised that all fishermen would be issued with laminated permits. Meanwhile, the work in connection with organising the proposed coast guard awareness committees is gathering momentum according to the media release of the Ministry of Social Services and Social Welfare.
