Minister Devananda takes steps to enhance production of animal products

Douglas Devananda, Minister of Social Services and Social Welfare, who is now involved in attempts to root out Malnutrition in Jaffna, whilst taking every conceivable step to prop up the ailing fishing industry, met with the representatives of dairy farmers in Jaffna on the last 13th at discussion for sorting out their problems with view to increase production of Milk and Milk related products.

Minister speaking at the discussion stated that steps were being taken to minimize the shortage of fish supply of Jaffna to certain degree, he was also trying his best to rid of the shortage of animal food in Jaffna, at the same time resorting to action to control their prices.Minister hopes to increase the production of animal products thereby supplementing the diets of the people with nutrients to rid of Malnutrition of Jaffna.

Representatives of dairy farmers informed the minister that they could overcome the shortage of animal food within a period of three months on receipt of raw materials of for their production. The Minister responding, stated that in such an event he would be able to control the prices of eggs, chicken, milk and milk related products. The Minister promised the participants that he would make necessary arrangements to import cows that could withstand the climatic conditions in Jaffna and also would provide financial assistance for production of animal food.
