Douglas Devananda, Minister of Social Services and Social Welfare, on behalf of the people of Jaffna requested the young doctors who pass out from Jaffna Medical Faculty, to at least serve a period of time in hospitals of the Jaffna peninsula.
Minister made this humanitarian appeal to the young doctors, taking into consideration the prevalent unrest in Jaffna in every field alike, this measure was resorted to as a means to overcome the severe shortage of medical practitioners in all the hospitals.
Minister has already initiated many a programme to uplift the health situation in the peninsula. He is up against the task of the shortage of doctors in all the hospitals, especially in the Teaching Hospital Jaffna, which has caused the specialists to resort to the duties of the other doctors, thereby to a great extent preventing them from taking up the lecturing in the Medical Faculty. Hon. Minister took up this position for stifling the problems that might hinder the Education of the medical students and also for the benefit of the patients who undergo untold hardships due to lack of doctors in the entire peninsula.
