Douglas Devananda, Minister of Social Services and Social Welfare, recently held a discussion with the Zonal Directors of Education in Jaffna on diverse issues concerning the present status of education in Jaffna.
It has been revealed that the educational activities in Jaffna have been compelled to be carried forward amidst many difficulties and drawbacks and the complaints made by the public on issues like non attendance of children to schools, students dropping their education half way and the officials concerned working according to their own agendas have prompted the Minister to hold this discussion.
At the discussion it was decided to implement result oriented programmes for encouraging students for resuming their education, having looked in to the causes for the students to resort to this sort of action.It was decided to appoint graduates as English teachers after having trained them in the South and also English qualified volunteer teachers as English teachers subsequent to training, to circumvent the dearth of English teachers in Jaffna.
At the discussion, attention was focused on the distribution of school uniforms as well as text books, it was decided to streamline the process leaving no room for future recurrence of these irregularities.
Minister also said at the discussion, that assistance could be obtained from the Ministries of the central Government especially form the Ministry of Social Services and Social Welfare and Nation Building in education development activities.
The Hon. Minister instructed the zonal directors to furnish him with action plans for developing education and to get rid of the short comings without any waste of time. No sooner than these plans are received by him, the Minister said that he would implement them after studying for uplift of education in Jaffna.
