What is the mystery behind the statement of Sir John Holms where he has insisted that we should be disarmed who are keeping arms for our self – defense and Holms’ silence in respect of the LTTE’s possessing of arms said Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Puligal better known as the Karuna Faction.According to statement released by the Karuna’s Party, “Sir John Holms, the United Nations' Under-Secretary-General for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief Coordinator made a statement at a special media conference held at the Cinnamon garden hotel in Colombo on Thursday ( 09-08-2007). His views in respect of our Organization is really shocking and have paved the way for posing certain questions.”
“Having placed our confidence in democracy we broke free from a terrorist outfit in order to fulfill the fair and justifiable rights and political aspirations of our people through political means and thereby creating a conducive environment where all the communities could lead a peaceful and harmonious life which will educational and economical wise develop our people,” said the statement.
“We are committed to public service and our sole aim is the welfare of our people. We are a responsible political organization and we are keeping our weapons with us only to safeguard ourselves from the fascist tigers who never accept alternative ideas. As this stands so how can our weapons be threatening to those who are launching the humanitarian missions such as development, humanitarian relief services, and resettlement, rehabilitation and reconstruction activities?” ,the statement questioners.
Accoriding to Karuna who is former militarty leader of the LTTE he also led by the LTTE’s strongest Jayanthan Regiment , “We are compelled to keep these arms in order to safeguard us from the LTTE who are targeting and targeted many of our innocent and unarmed political representatives. But it is mysterious that Sir John Holms’ insisting that we should be disarmed whereas his stoic silence in respect of the LTTE’s possessing of arms?”
“LTTE’s at their gun points carry out unwarranted activities such as child battalion conscription, forcible conscription, abduction and extortion of money. Accordingly we are shocked as to why Sir John Holms did not insist the LTTE who really pose a threat to the alternative view bearers and the civilians,” the party said.
TMVP also reply to alliged to email therest to NGO and INGO activating in the Sri Lanka, “the LTTE, via e-mail, using our name had threatened the NGOs and INGOs who are working in North and East for the well- being of our people with a view to tarnish the image of the political journey of our organization. In this connection we made clarifications to the representatives of the NGOs and INGOs of our stand.”
“Due to the war against terrorism waged in our country most of our people have been internally displaced and facing untold hardships. The NGOs are rendering a immense service to our country. We ever respect them and welcome their service. We are really indebted to the NGOs and INGOs for their valuable service. As this stands so why should we threaten them?” the party asked.
“We have constant meetings with the NGOs and INGOs in our political regional offices and our head office. We always maintain a good – natured and amiable relationship with the NGOs and INGOs,” their welcomes.
“The LTTE and their allies are working on a hidden agenda in order to tarnish our image at national and international level.”
Accordingly, we believe that Sir John Holms’ views in respect of our organization is indeed based on the false and unsubstantiated information provided by the LTTE and their allies.
The confidence of our people and brethren community on us have now been well established. Our political journey is expeditiously making head way with the blessing and support of the public.
Furthermore “We are a responsible political party. Accordingly, we also know the fact that the police and the three forces can hold weapons in order to maintain law and order in the country. We are not married to the weapons. Our weapons will never back up any anti- democratic activities. They are only our self- defenders. We are prepared to dissolve our military unit no sooner than the security of our unarmed political representatives is assured,” Karuna’s party said.
