Former President Chandrika Kumaratunga and Convener of the SLFP(M), Mangala Samaraweera on Monday had a 90 minute discussion on the current political developments in the country.
Kumaratunga who returned to the country on Sunday spoke with Samaraweera over the telephone where the MoU with the UNP, the success of the People Power campaign, the state of the economy, corruption in government and the ethnic issue were discussed amongst other issues.
It is learned the Jana Rala meeting scheduled for August 24 in Attanagalla was also discussed but sources close to both Kumaratunga and Samaraweera were tight lipped about the details of the discussion. Kumaratunga, it is learned had also spoken to several other senior SLFP members too upon her return.
High level political learns President Mahinda Rajapakse had expressed concern to confidants that Kumaratunga may throw her weight behind the newly formed National Council but sources close to Kumaratunga said the former President will not disclose her future plans so soon.
Kumaratunga had following the formation of the National Council wished it all success and stated it was fulfilling a great demand of the people.
