Civilian sources in Wanni revealed that eight Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) tax collectors had been executed publicly by supporters of the outfit’s intelligence leader Pottu Amman at Vattakachchi in Kilinochchi two weeks ago, according to an August 28 report of the Ministry of Defence Website. Amman later informed the public that the eight cadres had to be executed because they had misappropriated funds. However, a civilian who had managed to escape to government controlled areas recently told the Website that the actual reason for the killing was because they criticized the LTTE leaders who used funds for personal ends. The Website further learnt from these sources that the victims had openly criticized Amman for being the most fraudulent leader.
Three police personnel were wounded in a LTTE-triggered landmine explosion at Manipuram in the Karadiyannaru area of Batticaloa district on August 28-afternoon, according to Sri Lanka Army (SLA) reports.
Meanwhile, the LTTE claimed to have killed three troopers and foiled their alleged attempt to advance into the LTTE-held areas, reports Associated Press. Rasiah Ilanthirayan, the outfit’s military spokesperson, said in a statement e-mailed on August 27 that government troops tried to penetrate the outfit’s defenses in the Palamoddai village of Vavuniya district. Both sides exchanged gun and artillery fire for more than two hours in which three soldiers died and five more were wounded, he claimed. The LTTE did not suffer any casualties, the statement said. However, military spokesperson Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe said no clash was reported from the area on August 27.
On August 28, the LTTE alleged that nine boys and five girls being taken to be handed over to their parents in the Ampara district by the outfit’s political division and the Child Protection Authority were ambushed by security forces in Ampara district on August 27, according to The Hindu. As per the LTTE, the “underage youths” were being taken to a civilian area in accordance with an arrangement between the LTTE and UNICEF. The outfit’s district political head of Ampara, P. Kavaiyarasan, told Tamil Net that two of the boys had managed to return to an outfit base after the ambush and the fate of the others is not known. The Sri Lankan Defense Ministry, however, acknowledged that the Special Task Force (STF) troops confronted a group of LTTE cadres. The STF troops, after observing a movement of armed LTTE cadres in the Kanchikudichchiaru area opened fire at them and subsequently recovered one T-56 weapon from the area, adds SLA.
Police personnel deployed at Kalkuda recovered two kilograms of C-4 explosives, three detonators and a length of detonator code from the Pethalai area of Batticaloa district. One Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) launcher, four RPG bombs and four RPG chargers were recovered by troops from the Ransarathenna area on August 26. At Pulipanchikal, troops recovered 19 anti-personnel mines on the same day.
